What a TAN is

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10-character number required by anyone liable to deduct tax at source (TDS) or collect tax at source (TCS).

It must be quoted on all TDS/TCS returns, payment challans, and certificates. Companies and LLPs can obtain it along with incorporation; others apply using Form 49B.
