Professional Tax Registration
State tax registration for employers and professionals — where the state levies it.
What Professional Tax registration is
Professional Tax is a tax on professions, trades, and employment levied by certain state governments — such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Odisha — and capped at ₹2,500 per person per year.
An employer needs a Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC) to pay its own tax, and a Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC) to deduct and deposit its employees' Professional Tax.
Self-employed professionals need a PTEC. States that do not levy Professional Tax require no registration.
Who must register
- Employers in states that levy Professional Tax — PTEC for their own liability and PTRC to deduct from employees
- Self-employed professionals and traders in those states — PTEC
- No registration is needed in states that do not levy Professional Tax
